The vibrant city of Mombasa is the gateway to Kenya’s tranquil coast which boasts a diverse blend of cultures, sights, and over 300 miles of palm-fringed beaches stretching from the small town of Malindi in the north to the dazzling white sands of Diani in the south. Mombasa is a bustling city with a rich culture dating back to the 12th Century. The city itself is located on an island connected to the mainland by a bridge, causeway and ferry. Mombasa is famous for the surrounding miles of idyllic white sandy beaches, where the warm, clear waters are excellent for snorkeling, diving and water sports including windsurfing and waterskiing. The beaches all have soft white sand and many are backed by profusions of palms. There are offshore coral reefs which protect the beach and make superb snorkel spots. The nearest beaches from the Mombasa City are Nyali Beach, and then Bamburi, Shanzu and Kilambala stretch north. Migratory whale sharks also inhabit the waters during February and March each year. From June to September the beaches have a lot of seaweed washed up onto them. The best time to visit them is from October to April.
