Lake Natron Alkaline Shores

Lake Natron a soda lake located at the base of the active Ol Donyo Lengai volcano and the only known breeding ground for East Africa's lesser flamingos.

A soda lake at the base of the active Ol Donyo Lengai volcano, the area around Lake Natron is often described as having a desolate and almost lunar beauty. Lake Natron lies in a beautifully scenic area below the Rift Valley escarpment; it has such a high concentration of sodium, that the water is often viscous to the touch. There are rugged mountains where vultures soar and baboon bark, dusty gorges where the Maasai bring their cattle to drink and endless grassy plains.

Lake Natron is the only known breeding ground for East Africa's millions of lesser flamingos which cover the lake between August and October. There is good game viewing and birding in this harsh landscape with dry country species such as gerenuk, lesser kudu and oryx a specialty.

Located North of the Ngorongoro Crater, and far from the beaten track, on the shores of Lake Natron you will find the Maasai's Mountain of God - Ol Doinyo L'Engai Mountain. Ol Doinyo L'Engai Mountain is an active carbonate volcano, a focal point for the Maasai, whose land stretches out for hundreds of miles from it and a providing a thrilling hike up the mountain range.

From lush rainforest atop Mt. Gelai, to semi-desert along the flamingo-lined shores of Lake Natron, to wildlife-rich thorn bush thickets, winding sand rivers and near endless acacia-strewn plains, this region is a feast for the senses. Walks around the lake and to the streams and waterfalls along the nearby escarpment make for a fantastic adventure off the beaten track.
