Murchison Falls National Park is located in western Uganda at the northern end of the Albertine Rift Valley, where the bulky Bunyoro escarpment merges into the vast plains of Acholi land. Murchison Falls National Park is an unspoilt area famous for where the wide and placid River Nile is suddenly forced through a seven (7) meter narrow cleft/gorge into the Rift Valley escarpment 50 meters below producing a torrent of white water. The Murchison Falls are a dramatic sight that can be viewed on a birding and game viewing cruise by boat to the very foot of the waterfall which is a classic highlight on any Uganda safari.

To the north of the river is tall green grassland interrupted by patches of borassus palm, acacia and riverine woodland. To the south the vegetation becomes thicker with dense woodland and a beautiful area of closed canopy forest on Budongo Hill.

One of Uganda's oldest conservation areas, it was initially gazetted as a game reserve in 1926 to protect a savanna that Winston Churchill described in 1907 as 'Kew Gardens and the zoo combined on an unlimited scale'.

Affected by poaching but after it ceased in the 1980's the animal population increased rapidly and sightings of lion, elephant, hippo, waterbuck, leopard and hyena are now common. The birdlife is extraordinary, with over 460 species recorded in the park including numerous raptors, the shoebill stork, fish eagle, goliath heron, Egyptian geese, pelican, bee-eaters, kingfishers, hornbill and cormorant are commonly sighted.
