To the north of Mount Kenya, the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy stretches for over 45,000 acres. A black rhino, Grevy’s zebra, sitatunga and other wildlife private conservation sanctuary as well as an ongoing working borana cattle ranch.
Lewa Wildlife Conservancy has recently partnered with the neighboring Boran Ranch to create one big wildlife conservancy by removing the fence between the two conservancies.
Endangered species abound in the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. The sanctuary protects the critically endangered black rhino, Grevy’s zebra and sitatunga. It holds approximately 12% of Kenya’s black rhino population, and the largest single population of Grevy’s zebras in the world. It also holds endangered chimpanzees the only ones found in Kenya rescued from smugglers by the Kenya Government. It is also home to the Big 5 and 70 other mammal species as well as 400 bird species. A catalyst for conservation, it is also a model for ensuring that conservation benefits local communities. Lewa is so much more than simply a memorable holiday; it’s a way to make a contribution to conservation.
