Loita Hills, Kenya Destinations

The Loita Hills are one of Kenya's last remaining true wilderness areas and an area protected by the World Conservation Union. Rarely visited and as a result it is widely believed that the most deeply rooted traditional Maasai culture exists here not forgetting the rare bird and flower species.

The Loita Hills are one of Kenya's last remaining true wilderness areas and form an important part of the Maasai Mara Ecosystem. The low-lying Loita mountain range is located south of Nairobi and northeast of the Masai Mara on the western edge of the Great Rift Valley just North of the Tanzanian border. The hills have an average altitude of 2000m and the Rift Valley floor is more than a kilometer below.

This area is rarely visited and as a result it is widely believed that the most deeply rooted traditional Maasai culture exists here. There are pockets of remote forests, wide open plains surrounded by the stunning hillsides and dotted with roaming wildlife and birdlife. This isn't an area for viewing big game but more so somewhere to enjoy the scenery, walk with the local Maasai and learn more about their culture and communities. A wonderful peaceful place to begin or end a safari trip in Kenya.

The mysterious Loita Forest - an area protected by the World Conservation Union, and a very valuable bird and indigenous forests with its peaks and valleys, waterfalls, rare bird and flower species.  The Loita forest covers an area of 330 km2. It is one of the few non-gazetted indigenous forests in Kenya with great cultural and spiritual value.

The highest point in the Loita Forest is Oltiyani, about 2300 meters above sea level with expensive views all the way to Ngorongoro in Tanzania and the Osasinai river where you can swim and drink crystal clear water.

Spectacular birds such as Hartlaubs Turaco and Ground Hornbill are residents around the area and also the black and white colobus monkey, bushbuck, buffalo, elephant, dik-dik and zebra. There are also many spectacular flowers in their colorful dresses. Gigantic trees as the African olive tree and Warburgia tell us how old the forest really is.

The Loita hills and forests offer some of the best places in Kenya to conduct walking safaris which take three to six days depending on one’s preference. Horseback safaris though not currently popular can also be conducted in the area on request.
