Nairobi City is one of Africa's most dynamic cities; a vibrant, sprawling metropolis and a popular starting point for many safari adventures and business travelers. Explore the colonial sights of the city, shop for gifts and memorabilia at the Maasai Market, conduct a business meeting or a conference, relax around a tranquil hotel pool shielded from the world, visit wildlife conservation programmes and even enjoy big game viewing in Nairobi National Park the only nation park within a city.
Nairobi started in 1899, by the British as a small shantytown depot along the railway line stretching from Mombasa to Uganda. Today it is one of Africa’s major cities, boasting a rich colonial history, African headquarters of many international organizations and corporations, headquarters of the United Nations and boasting a number of hotels housing pre-safari goers and business travelers in comfortable surrounds – many with pools and spas – away from the city’s hustle and bustle.
Nairobi’s restaurant scene is diverse, with seafood and all kinds of meat featuring heavily on the menus of eateries from traditional Kenyan to Ethiopian, Indian, Chinese and Japanese, as well as cafés, coffee shops and fast food joints.
Nairobi’s attractions include:
The Karen Blixen Museum, home to the author of 'Out of Africa', and the Nairobi National Museum, giving an insight into the city's history and culture.
Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage: Visit the wonderful Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage (open to the public 11 am - midday) providing habitat for orphan elephant and rhino calves whose mothers have fallen victim to poachers. Once the inquisitive animals are strong enough, they are released into Tsavo National Park.
The Giraffe Centre in the leafy suburb of Langata is also well-visited, established to conserve the endangered Rothschild giraffe with breeding and re-introduction to the wild programmes. Visitors here are able to feed and even sometimes kiss the giraffes from a raised platform.
The Nairobi National Park is just over four miles from the city centre, with its herds of zebra, giraffe and Big Five animals roaming against a backdrop of city skyscrapers. This is the only national park in the world with such a variety of animal and bird life close to a major city.
In spite of its attractions, Nairobi is very much a ‘gateway’ destination; ideal for a short stay but really quite secondary to its surroundings. Discover Kenya's capital city before setting out on a thrilling safari, less than one hours’ flight or just a few hours’ drive away.
