Another natural attraction worth visiting is the Marafa Depression, northwest of Malindi, popularly known as Hell’s Kitchen (due to the searing midday temperatures) and locally as Nyari: ‘the place broken by itself’. Incredibly underrated and unvisited, the Marafa Depression is a sandstone canyon in the midst of remote rural communities, with varied rocky outcrops that are red, yellow and white in color. It has views to the jungle beyond and is particularly impressive at sunset.

As well as the beach at Malindi, tranquil Watamu with its white sand beaches and coral outcropping can be reached within half an hour.
