Malindi was founded in the 13th Centaury Malindi's interesting heritage an eclectic mix of Swahili, Arab and European styles is a testament to its former importance as a trade and stop-off point for intrepid adventurers and seafarers, but it's the exquisite white sands, the azure Indian Ocean waters and relaxed, friendly local flavor that bring modern travelers to these exotic shores of Kenya.
Warm year round temperatures coupled with azure waters and endless sandy beaches make this a relaxing holiday destination and an ideal tropical beach break.
The town itself is divided into the narrow streets of the ‘Old Town’ and ‘New Town’. Wander around sights including the pillar tombs in front of the Juma mosque on the waterfront, see the small palm-thatched Portuguese chapel, and follow the signs to the bell-shaped Vasco da Gama Pillar, erected as a navigational aid in 1499. Spend time watching the fisherman casting their nets from the jetty and traditional dhows sailing by.
For keen golfers, the Malindi Golf & Country Club offers daily memberships, perfect for a quick tee off, and a buzzing market district allows for some great browsing. Game fishing and water sports are other popular activities.
South of Malindi town is where you’ll discover the area’s most popular attraction: Malindi Marine National Park. Dive beneath the turquoise waters and immerse yourself in a stunning underwater wonderland of coral gardens, fringing reefs, turtles and colorful fish.
Another natural attraction worth visiting is the Marafa Depression, northwest of Malindi, popularly known as Hell’s Kitchen (due to the searing midday temperatures) and locally as Nyari: ‘the place broken by itself’. Incredibly underrated and unvisited, the Marafa Depression is a sandstone canyon in the midst of remote rural communities, with varied rocky outcrops that are red, yellow and white in color. It has views to the jungle beyond and is particularly impressive at sunset.
As well as the beach at Malindi, tranquil Watamu with its white sand beaches and coral outcropping can be reached within half an hour.
