Mount Kilimanjaro, Northern Tanzania Destination. Kilimanjaro the name itself is a mystery wreathed in clouds. It might mean Mountain of Light, Mountain of Greatness or Mountain of Caravans or it might not. The local people, the Wachagga, don't even have a name for the whole massif, only Kipoo (and now known as Kibo), for the familiar snowy peak that stands imperious, overseer of the continent, the summit and the roof of Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro.
Standing at 5,895 meters tall, Kilimanjaro towers over the majestic rolling plains of Kenya and Tanzania. This is an amazing experience and sight to behold to climbers especially experiencing the snow capped glaciers, a few degrees south of the equator.
Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest and undoubtedly most famous mountain in Africa and, at 5895 meters it’s the highest walk-able summit in the world even better it’s close to the equator. Tantalizing glimpses of the magnificent snow-capped summit of Kilimanjaro from the plains below belie the unique combination of eco-climatic zones which hikers attempting the summit will experience. It begins with rainforest and then moves into mountain forest, heath and moorland, alpine desert and finally, snow and ice. During your Tanzania holiday, challenge yourself and see this natural wonder up close on an exhilarating climb a literally breathtaking camping trek.
From lush rainforest at the foot to Kibo’s snowy peak, climbing Kilimanjaro is the ultimate challenge of a lifetime, and being a non-technical climb it is open to most people of reasonable fitness. Safety is our priority, and to give our guests the most enjoyment of the climb we make sure all climbers are well looked after, be they porters or paying guests. Guides are knowledgeable in the botany and history of the mountain, and are invaluable companions for the final bid on the summit.
To reach the peak, we favor two of the mountain’s more remote routes - the scenic Machame Route, and the quiet Lemosho Route, approaching the mountain from the west. The one-way Machame Route climbs up the southwest of Mount Kilimanjaro. This is a more challenging, but less frequented, trail than the busier Marangu Route and offers more of a wilderness experience. The best months for undertaking the climb are July to September (cold but dry) and January to mid-March (clearer and warmer).
Those who prefer to gaze up at the icy dome of Kilimanjaro from afar can admire the mountain across the plains of Western Kilimanjaro, an exclusive game concession of floodplains, hills and acacia woodland. There are plenty of elephant and interesting antelope such as lesser kudu. This is just across the border from Amboseli in Kenya but is a much less commercially sophisticated region and so the interaction with local people is a rather more authentic experience. Given you are outside national park restrictions, you can take guided walks and enjoy night game drives which might even yield sightings such as striped hyena.
