Saadani National Park Beach Tanzania

Saadani National Park, Tanzania’s Swahili Coast

Saadani National Park is one of the only remaining protected coastal areas in Africa. The park covers 1100 square kilometers and is the only wildlife sanctuary in Tanzania which borders the sea.

The park supports a variety of habitats from the palm-fringed beaches interspersed with mangroves on the coast, to the open grassland and acacia copses inland. There is lush riparian vegetation lining the rivers and pockets of dense thickets scattered throughout the park.

Surrounding the national park are many villages which make their living through farming or fishing depending on their location. The park is not only home to humans but also to a huge variety of wildlife from large cats to lazy hippos and crocodiles.

Both marine and mainland flora can be found within the national park and features a wealth of wildlife of about 30 species of larger mammals including giraffe, buffalo, waterbuck, reedbuck, hartebeest, wildebeest, and the red duiker, as well as many reptiles and birds. The number of lions and elephants in the park has been increasing and sightings are becoming more common in recent years. The ocean nearby is also home to many species of fish, dolphins and humpback whale.

Depending on the time of year guests visit Saadani National park they will see different wildlife activity. Between December and March there is increasing activity around the waterholes because of the recent short rains.  From June to September it is the coolest time of the year when it is best for spotting hippo and crocodile in the bordering Wami River.

Forest walks and game drives are full of wildlife activity at this time of year. Buffalo are predominantly visible in October and November and the migratory birds start to arrive. This is also when the flowers start to grow in the parched landscape after some light rains.
